T
hree of the eight regents at the
University of Michigan have
sprung into action based on
Jewish community concerns and their
own discomfort about the University
of Michigan Press' exclusive distribu-
tion contract with Pluto Press, a self-
styled "radical" British publisher with a
catalogue of anti-Zionist and anti-Israel
publications, which some critics say veer
into anti-Semitism.
At the Nov. 15 meeting of the U-
M Board of Regents, Andrea Fischer
Newman, R-Ann Arbor, read a letter
written by herself and regents Laurence
Deitch, D-Bingham Farms, and Andrew
Richner, R-Grosse Pointe Park, to the
executive board, which oversees U-M
Press.
The letter expresses "grave disap-
pointment" with its recent unanimous
decision to continue the contract without
revisions and says the board "ought to
exit all of its distribution arrangements

Conservation Tips
What you can do to stop global warming:
• Open blinds on winter days to let the sun shine in. The heat will be
absorbed by the interior.
• In the winter, set your thermostat to 68 and lower the temperature
when you go to bed or are away from home, or use a programmable
thermostat to do it for you.
• Seal leaks around your foundation and electrical, plumbing and
cable holes.
• Maintain your heating and cooling system on a regular basis.
• Get a smart meter: Tell your utility company you want to have a
meter that can tell you what you're consuming and spending in real
time and one that can turn appliances off and on in response to chang-
ing prices.
"One generation goes and another generation comes; but the Earth
remains forever."
- Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) 1:4

with unaffiliated publishers because of
the Press' complete lack of authority ow
the content of distributed books while
the University retains complete respons:
bility for negative pubic reaction to surf
books." The policy revision also would
have the effect of ending the Pluto Press
contract.
The regents specifically cited pub-
lic reaction to Overcoming Zionism:
Creating a Single Democratic State in
Israel/Palestine, a Pluto Press book the
university has said did not meet its own,
standards for publication, but that it wa,
contractually required to distribute. TIN
regents' letter stated, "Sound judgment
should lead thoughtful people to con-
clude that the Press should not dissemi-
nate books unworthy of its own imprint
The regent's meeting also was
addressed by Jonathan Harris, direc-
tor of StandWithUs-Michigan; Don
Cohen, Great Lakes regional director of
B'nai B'rith International (BBI); Betsy
Kellman, Michigan regional director of
the Anti-Defamation League (ADL); ant
