Adam Sterling: Making a difference.

Fighting
Genocide

Film highlights
Darfur activists.

Suzanne Chessler
Special to the Jewish News

A

dam Sterling's Jewish
upbringing stressed val-
ues over rituals; his fam-
ily taught him about the Holocaust
and the horrors of genocide.
When Sterling, now 24, was a
student at UCLA, he learned about
the Sudanese government's atroci-
ties against the people of Darfur
and he wanted to help the victims
in the struggle for power.
Sterling advanced from inform-
ing others about the mass mur-
ders and displacement tactics to
convincing American lawmakers
to stop financial links with the gov-
ernment of Sudan. His initiatives
caught the attention of film writer-
director Ted Braun.
Joined with the stories of five
other activists, Sterling's triumphs
are captured in Braun's documenta-
ry Darfur Now, which opens Friday,
Nov. 9, at the Maple Art Theatre in
Bloomfield Township. The movie
also introduces a Darfurian woman
who joins rebel forces, the chief
prosecutor of the International
Criminal Court in the Hague, a
United Nations humanitarian, a
worldly actor and a community
leader in a refugee camp.
"The film shows that if you care
and are creative, you can make a
difference says Sterling, 24, help-
ing Darfur victims through the
