Fighting Genocide Film highlights Darfur activists. Suzanne Chessler Special to the Jewish News A dam Sterling's Jewish upbringing stressed val- ues over rituals; his fam- ily taught him about the Holocaust and the horrors of genocide. When Sterling, now 24, was a student at UCLA, he learned about the Sudanese government's atroci- ties against the people of Darfur and he wanted to help the victims in the struggle for power. Sterling advanced from inform- ing others about the mass mur- ders and displacement tactics to convincing American lawmakers to stop financial links with the gov- ernment of Sudan. His initiatives caught the attention of film writer- director Ted Braun. Joined with the stories of five other activists, Sterling's triumphs are captured in Braun's documenta- ry Darfur Now, which opens Friday, Nov. 9, at the Maple Art Theatre in Bloomfield Township. The movie also introduces a Darfurian woman who joins rebel forces, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in the Hague, a United Nations humanitarian, a worldly actor and a community leader in a refugee camp. "The film shows that if you care and are creative, you can make a difference says Sterling, 24, help- ing Darfur victims through the Genocide on page B16 MENDELSSOHN KORNGOLD DVOliAK Fingal's Cave, Overture Violin Concerto Symphony No. 9, "From the New World" Taking inspiration from both musical and literary traditions found in America during his visit, Dvoiak composed his final symphony with the scope and spirit of the New World with- out betraying his own Czech heritage.
