"It's wonderful
to be surrounded
by friends."

"I was lonely at home;
I missed laughter. My
move to The Park at
Trowbridge was a
wonderful experience.
The entire community
is warm and gracious,
and I was welcomed
like royalty. I like
everything about The
Park at Trowbridge
— the wonderful staff,
food, transportation,
entertainment, friends
and neighbors. And now
I can choose to be by
myself or surrounded
by friends. I've never
had it so good."

Debating For A Cure

Ovarian cancer survivors plan forum
to educate others.

She'll Liebman Dorfman

Senior Writer

W

hen Elaine Greenberg
of Farmington Hills was
diagnosed with ovarian
cancer in 2000, among the friends
she turned to was Lila Lazarus, health
reporter for Fox 2 News. Lazarus
referred her to ovarian cancer survi-
vor Carolyn Benivegna, a Michiganian
living in Florida, where she had
founded the Ovarian Cancer Alliance
of Florida-Gulf Coast.
Now that Benivegna lives in Novi,
she and Greenberg finally met face
to face — during an interview with
Lazarus on ovarian cancer issues that
aired late last month.
Greenberg and Benivegna's next
combined effort will be participa-
tion in "Survivors' Debate: The Past
Decade in Ovarian Cancer" Oct. 27 at
the Sheraton Detroit Novi. Benivegna
will be a presenter; Greenberg is a
volunteer.
The debate format allows for dif-
ferent viewpoints on such topics as
awareness and communication, early
detection, survival rates, access to care
and genetics.
"Ashkenazi Jewish women are at
increased risk for ovarian and breast
cancer due to a higher incidence of a
genetic mutation in this ethnic group:'
Benivegna said.
The debate is not only for cancer
survivors, stressed Greenberg. It is
also for caregivers, healthcare profes-
sionals, researchers, pharmacists, the
media and the public.

Continuing Awareness
Greenberg also plans to join
Benivegna to educate third-year medi-
cal students about ovarian cancer and
its symptoms through the Ovarian
Cancer National Alliance (OCNA) pro-
gram, Survivors Teaching Students:
Saving Women's Lives. The presenta-
tion by women typically diagnosed
at an advanced stage illustrates how
difficult it is to be diagnosed early and
the devastating results that can ensue.
OCNA says ovarian cancer has no

early detection test, is the deadliest
of all gynecologic cancers and that
research on ovarian cancer is drasti-
cally under-funded relative to its high
mortality rate.
"The program has already been
implemented in almost 50 of our
nation's medical schools',' Greenberg
said. "Carolyn has been instrumental
in getting approval for the program
at Michigan State University, and is
working toward having it implement-
ed in other Michigan medical schools."
Much of Greenberg's work on behalf
of education and raising ovarian
cancer awareness involves music. A
professional musician, she sings to
groups affected by cancer and often
accompanies a music therapist, sing-
ing to hospitalized cancer patients.
Greenberg made a musical CD and
a CD of inspirational words, selling
them through Living For Music, the
non-profit corporation she formed
