C
ountless good deeds and acts of
lovingkindness take place every
day thanks to the staff, volun-
teers and "mitzvah makers" involved with
Jewish Home & Aging Services. The West
Bloomfield-based agency, in partnership
with the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, has been
caring for older adults in Metro
Detroit for the last 100 years.
"We've learned from demo-
graphics that Detroit is the sec-
ond-oldest community in the
United States next to Florida's
retirement communities:'
said Geri Margolis of West
Bloomfield.
She chaired a special event
Sept. 18 at the Bingham Farms
home of Doreen Hermelin to thank the
organization's "mitzvah makers," donors
who've contributed $1,400 or more to
support the agency's many programs and
services. About 125 people gathered for
cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, a buffet din-
ner and a reception. The gathering also
honored JHAS Executive Director Carol
Rosenberg for her 27 years of dedicated
service. It was held in advance of the
agency's big 100th anniversary celebra-
tion, also honoring Rosenberg, Sept. 30 at
the Detroit Opera House.
"Carol is not only a recognizable name
in our community; but she's known
throughout the country and is sought
out for guidance because of her expertise
in her field, taking care of older adults:'
Margolis said.
"She is a visionary, especially for the
challenges of our graying popu-
lace. We feel the journey these
100 years has been a labor of
love. Our experiences, research,
predecessors, families, staff,
volunteers and the community
constantly inspire us. We're
determined to continue on this
journey to meet the ever chang-
ing needs of the frail older
adult through the provision of
our aging services and pro-
grams which emphasizes and
respects Jewish values, in the belief that
all things are possible."
Co-chairs for the 100th anniver-
sary celebration were: Hannah Moss of
Huntington Woods; Pearlena Bodzin
of Southfield; Joel Smith of West
Bloomfield; and Howard Tapper of
Bloomfield Hills.
