eonard Alkon and Al Silber, two
huge contributors to Detroit's
rich track and field history, were
honored by the Detroit Track and Field Old
Timers at the group's 13th annual reunion
and dinner.
"Each year since 2001, we've honored
Detroit track greats at our dinner. It's won-
derful that two outstanding Jewish athletes
were among our honorees this year," said Ed
Kozloff, secretary of the Old Timers group
and an all-city cross-country runner in the
early 1960s at Detroit Cooley High School.
Alkon, 85, was the city 100- and 220-dash
champion in the early 1940s while at Detroit
Northern High School. His best high school
clocking in the 100 was 9.7 seconds. At the
time, the world record in the event was 9.3
seconds. After moving on to the University

Detroit's Michael Hyman won a gold medal
in the boys ages 15-16 400-meter dash at the
Orange County JCC Maccabi Games. It was
reported here Sept. 6 that Hyman won a relay
gold medal. Hyman won his preliminary
heat in the 400 and he held off two competi-
tors to win the final in a quick 55 seconds.
Detroit track coach Joel Kashdan also
noted that for the first time in five years, he
was able to field a complete girls relay team.
Emily and Rachel Chocron, Nicole Meisner
and Jenna Pickman won gold medals in the
girls ages 13-14 4x100 and 4x100 relays, and
a silver medal in the girls ages 13-14 sprint
medley relay.
Kashdan held out Rachel Chocron from
the 1500 and Pickman from the 200 to rest
them for the sprint medley relay. Li
