elebrating its 10th anniver-
sary, the Jewish Community
Chaplaincy Program, a
service of Jewish Home & Aging
Services, continues to expand its
outreach services to local non-Jewish
healthcare facilities.
The chaplaincy program annu-
ally provides more than 900 visits to
residents of 100 non-Jewish nurs-
ing homes. The program addresses
residents' Jewish needs and connects
them to the Jewish community,
thereby reducing isolation and help-
ing maintain Jewish heritage.
The program has stepped in
at the former Menorah House
on Greenfield near 11 Mile, now
Medilodge of Southfield. Previously,
Jewish services were provided by a
rabbi on staff. No longer a kosher
facility, it does not provide rabbini-
cal services.
The program's leadership —
Chaplain David Polter and Program
Coordinator Michelle Chekan, — are
working closely with Medilodge
of Southfield's activity director to
provide Jewish programming and
services that include weekly visits
to residents, a weekly Oneg Shabbat,
Jewish music, reminiscence pro-
grams, intergenerational programs
and holiday celebrations and parcels.
In addition, community volunteers
visit with residents and conduct
Jewish programs.
Since Medilodge of Southfield is
no longer kosher, families may bring
in kosher meals. In honor of Rosh
Hashanah, working with the facility's
administration, the program pro-
vided a pre-holiday gathering — and
Mimi Markofsky of Elite Kosher
Catering sponsored a kosher holiday
meal served by volunteers. Additional
holidays will be celebrated similarly.
