map aid to hard-hit
local community.

I

n these uncertain economic
times, when many families in
the Jewish community are fac-
ing new challenges of unemploy-
ment, mortgage foreclosure and
other serious financial strain, the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit has developed a collabora-
tive initiative with area congrega-
tions to drive the message home
that "no family stands alone."
"Federation has always led our
communal response, particularly in
critical times of need',' said Beverly
Liss, Federation's annual fund-
raising co-chair, along with Gary
Shiffman.
"Given the declining economic
conditions in Michigan, Federation's
partner agencies, including Jewish
Family Services, Jewish Home &
Aging Services and Hebrew Free
Loan Association, are experienc-
ing a sharp rise in the number of
requests from families in need of
emergency financial assistance."
For example, Hebrew Free Loan
has seen a 48 percent increase from
families requesting bridge loans
between jobs or during illness or
disability, and a 22 percent increase
in loan request for job training.
To help those in need connect
to its network of 19 social service
agencies, Federation has enlisted the
support of 16 congregations, repre-
senting thousands of families in the
community, to spread the word.
Speaking on behalf of par-
ticipating congregations, Rabbi
Arnie Sleutelberg, president of
the Michigan Board of Rabbis,
said, "We are proud to stand with
Federation to spread a unified mes-
sage expressing the serious issue of
need in our community.
"As we begin a new year, it is our
hope that it will be a better year
for many, and that through this
message Federation resources and
financial assistance will 'turn risk
into opportunity' for those indi-
viduals, families and children who
have turned to our community for
help."

Resource Line at (248) 592-2650.
