t started with a simple wish; Lisa Lis of Farmington Hills wanted to rekindle some
old friendships from her days as a camper and counselor in the 1970s at Camp
Sea-Gull in Charlevoix. But she had no idea how many other former campers would
share her desire to reconnect. As Lis began to arrange a small reunion, contacting people
who attended the Jewish owned, Jewish run sleep-away camp on Lake Charlevoix, her
idea took flight.
The result? About 375 Camp Sea-Gull alumni from 16* states, including Florida,
Texas, New York, California, Arizona and Colorado, came together at Joe Dumars
Fieldhouse in Shelby Township on Sept. 1 to sing
songs, share old photos and relive wonderful child-
hood memories.
"It was just an amazing night;' Lis said. "We had
people from various summers from 1955-1995. Two
even came from England!"
The reunion was filled with nostalgia for Eugene
Driker of Detroit and his wife, Elaine. The couple
met prior to camp, but attended together and ulti-
mately got married.
"I was there the first summer in 1955 when the
camp opener Mr. Driker recalled. "It was a time
before people had backyard swimming pools or
belonged to tennis clubs, so going away to camp

By all accounts, Camp Sea-Gull forged many
strong bonds; resulting in dozens of marriages
and countless lifelong friendships. The camp was started by the late Regene and Lew
Schulman. The reunion also served as a tribute to their memories.
"Lew was an educator, a former principal of Harrison High School in Farmington
Hills and later the superintendent of Farmington Schools," Lis said. "The Schulmans
