part series on preparing for the High
Holidays with a talk on forgiveness on

Services at 6 p.m. followed by dinner

High Holiday Services
High Holiday services will be offered
by the Birmingham-Bloomfield Chai
Center, with no membership require-
ments and no charge for seats.
Services will be at 9 a.m. on the two
days of Rosh Hashanah, Sept. 13 and
14, and 10 a.m. on Yom Kippur, Sept.
22. There is also a Kol Nidre service,
Sept. 21, at 7:15 p.m. All services
will be at the Masonic Lodge, 37357
Woodward in Bloomfield Hills.
In addition, the Chai Center will
offer holiday meals in a family setting
on the two nights of Rosh Hashanah,
a New Year luncheon after services on
the first day of Rosh Hashanah, and a
break-fast after Yom Kippur. Call (248)

Services at the Chai Center include
prayer books with transliterations and
English translations, insights from the
rabbi and a sermon about personal
growth. Also featured is a junior con-
gregation for children.

Lakeside Service
A special lakeside Rosh Hashanah
service will be held in Birmingham on
the east side of Quarton Lake at 5 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 13.
The short service is sponsored by
the Birmingham-Bloomfield Chai
Center and is open to all at no charge.

Refreshments will be served.
A late-day service by a body of
water is an ancient practice, Tashlich.

East Side Celebrates
The Grosse Pointe Jewish Council has
scheduled High Holiday services for
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Led by Rabbi Ernst J. Conrad with
cantorial soloist Bryant Frank, the
services will celebrate Rosh Hashanah
on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 12,
and the morning of Thursday, Sept. 13.
Services for Yom Kippur will be held
on the evening of Friday, Sept. 21, and
throughout the day Saturday, Sept.
22. On both holidays, there will be
children's services.
The Grosse Pointe Jewish Council

Selichot Under The Stars
Temple Beth El will observe Selichot
Under the Stars, Saturday, Sept. 8 in,
the temple courtyard, 7400 Telegraph,
Bloomfield Township.
A dessert reception at 8:30 p.m. is
followed by a 9 p.m. musical program,
featuring the West Lounge, a klezmer-
jazz fusion band. At 10 p.m., Rabbis
Daniel Syme and David Castiglione
and Cantorial Soloist Rachel Gottlieb
lead a Havdalah and healing service.

Beth El Adult Education
Temple Beth El's 12-week Wednesday
adult education classes begin Sept. 5 at
the Bloomfield Township synagogue.
Available are two Hebrew classes
taught by Lea Beurer: a 6 p.m. conver-
sational Hebrew class and a 10:30 a.m.
advanced Hebrew class. Costs are $50
for members and $75 for others.
"Introduction to Judaism," a 10-
week course for prospective converts,
non-Jewish partners of Jews and Jews
seeking a better understanding of
Judaism will be led by Rabbi David
Castiglione and begins 7 p.m. Oct. 10.
Couples will be charged only one fee.
At 7 p.m. Oct. 10, 17, 24 and 31 and
Nov. 7 and 14, Rabbi Daniel Syme
will present "A Potpourri of Jewish
Learning." No charge.
Keren Alpert will lead a monthly
lunch and learn on selected Thursdays
at noon and Wednesdays at 7 p.m.
At 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays begin-
ning Sept. 5, Lea Beurer leads a study
of Torah text. No Hebrew reading is
required. $35 members; $50 others.
