SAMUEL LESSON, 98, of Southfield,
died Aug. 3, 2007.
He was an amateur sportsman all of
his life. Born in the White Chapel area of
London, he first came to Canada as a boy
and there played soccer. As a teenager in
the United States, he turned his passion
to baseball — as a left-handed pitcher
he was unbeatable.
In his later years, he bowled on vari-
ous teams (and woe to the bystander
who happened to be standing behind
his wicked back swing). He finally found
speed walking and he earned many
medals in the Senior Olympics.
Mr. Lesson worked for Chrysler for 51
years, earning many commendations for
his suggestions. He was one of the work-
ers who struggled and fought for union-
ization, going on strike when there was
no union strike money. His wife, who
had to make do during those difficult
days, will bear witness to the suffering.
He would often reminisce about the
days when he and other youngsters
would go into the old Navin Field dur-
ing practice time and retrieve balls hit
into the outfield by the Detroit Tigers.
His favorite player was Ty Cobb, and
he would smile when he told how the
great Cobb would admonish the boys by
warning them to "Be careful out there (in
the outfield)."
Cobb, he said, was a friend to the boys,
often giving away balls that had seen a
better day. Those balls always ended up
in a sandlot game.
Mr. Lesson's eyes would mist up when
he would talk about Ty Cobb and those
beat-up baseballs. "I should have kept
one, just for show, instead of using them
up in a game.
Mr. Lesson is survived by his wife of
74 years, Rose Lesson; sister-in-law and
brother-in-law, Betty and Al Rasof; many
nieces and nephews.
He was the loving father of the late
Edwin Lesson; dear brother of the late
Thomas and the late Florence Lesson.
