Ruth Mossok Johnston of Franklin
has been appointed major gifts and
planned giving manager by Detroit-
based United Way of Southeastern
Michigan. She will be responsible for
planning, developing and implement-
ing activities to support the United
Way's Women's Initiative program and
other special initiatives to encourage
leadership giving among individuals.
Howard L. Margolis of Birmingham
has joined the PrivateBank-Michigan
in Bloomfield Hills, a unit of Private
Bancorp Inc. He is managing director
and director of wealth management.
Wilbert Simkovitz of Oak Park
has achieved life member status in
the National Society of Professional
Engineers and the Michigan Society of
Professional Engineers. He has worked
in the profession for 41 years while
also working as an attorney (43 years).
He founded a chapter of the MSPE
and twice served as its president.
Simkovitz has served in the Army for
34 years, including support service to
the Israel Defense Forces.
Eddy Rubin, former Detroiter of Los
Angeles, has started Wrench Mints
Inc., manufacturing a breath mint
shaped like a wrench for the hardware,
automotive and home improvement
markets. In four months, the product
has been distributed to 200 stores.
Howard Wallach of Farmington
Hills was elected by his colleagues as
president of the Farmington Public
Schools Board of Education. Wallach,
an attorney with Foley & Mansfield
PC, in Southfield, has lived in the
district for 16 years. He is past chair-
man of the Anti Defamation League's
Michigan Region, based in Bloomfield
Township, and is past president of
both the Jewish Community Relations
Council of Metropolitan Detroit
and the Israel Cancer Association of
Michigan.
David L. Steinberg of Farmington
Hills, a partner at Thav, Gross,
Steinway & Bennett PC, a law firm
in Bingham Farms, has co-authored
an article in the summer issue of the
American Bar Association's Franchise
Law Journal. He and two other attor-
neys in San Francisco wrote "Breaking
Up Is Hard To Do," addressing the
right of franchisors to obtain royalties
from franchisees even after the con-
tract is terminated.
Hyman Bass, a University of
Michigan professor of mathematics
and math education, was named one
of eight National Medal of Science
laureates and met with President Bush
at the White House on July 27.
