LAYNE GAYMAN
KARDENER, 68,
died July 12, 2007.
She was a viva-
cious, charismatic
individualist who
loved to laugh, sing
and dance and
Kardener
who demonstrated
the value of being
unconventional and unique. She
taught us all how much richer is a life
lived with passion.
Originally from Detroit, she was
an alumna of Mumford High School,
class of 1955, and Wayne State
University, class of 1958.
Over the course of her professional
life, Mrs. Kardener was a fifth-grade
schoolteacher in Livonia; a mar-
riage, family and child counselor
and a family mediator. In 1982, she
co-authored a guide to mitigate the
harmful effect of divorce on chil-
dren, which is still being distributed
nationwide throughout the family
court system. She remained a fer-
vent advocate for children's rights in
divorce.
A spiritual person, Mrs.
Kardener was devoted to Judaism
and the Jewish people. Raised
an Orthodox Jew, she discovered
Reconstructionism in the mid-1960s
when she moved to Los Angeles and
became a member of Kehillat Israel
synagogue.
She took immense pleasure in
sharing the beauty of Judaism with
others, starting with her family. As a
young wife and mother, she was also
a community leader in the Pacific
Palisades, Calif., chapters of Church
Women United and Hadassah.
She is survived by her children,
Moss and Rona Kardener and "daugh-
ter-in-love" Renee Kardener; grand-
children, Gabriel and Aviva Kardener,
all of Oakland, Calif.; brother, Joel
Gayman of Los Angeles.
