RETIREMENT LIVING

"Mom's
happiness
is absolutely
priceless."

When dad died a year ago,
I watched helplessly as my
fun-loving, outgoing mom
stayed home most nights.
When she visited The Park
at Trowbridge, she quickly
saw residents interacting
and enjoying activities
together. She leaves for
breakfast at 8:30 and
sometimes doesn't return to
her apartment until evening.

Mom is building new
memories and meeting
new friends. My sister
and I are happy knowing
mom's involved and
enjoying life again.

To The Rescue

Jerusalem — Within hours of the first
rocket attack just a few weeks ago,
World ORT supplied Sha'ar HaNegev
with 30 laptops — a mobile computer
laboratory — to enable students to
complete critical exam-related work
in the safety of the school's under-
ground bomb shelter. The first 15
computers arrived just 24 hours after
ORT learned that many lessons had
to be cancelled after another rocket
attack because of a lack of reinforced
classrooms. In cooperation with
the Ministry of Education, Science
Journey works with more than 30 local
authorities to apply ORT's expertise
to raise the standards of science and
technology education in Israel.
When the Red Alert warning of
a Qassam rocket sounds, children
and staff have only 14 seconds to
get to one of the school's reinforced
concrete shelters. Schools participat-
ing in Science Journey await World
ORT Teaching Empowerment Centers
— staff rooms equipped with work-
ing stations, scanners, photocopiers,
printers, digital cameras, internet and
intranet connections, photo and video
processing software, design and devel-
opment software, binding equipment
and Power Point equipment — every-
thing teachers need to prepare lessons
and course work.

Syria Relents On Golan

Jerusalem/JTA — Syria reportedly
offered to let Israelis living on the
Golan Heights remain should it recov-
er the territory.
"In Syria, there are many minorities
— Christians, Armenians, Kurds,"
Syria's ambassador to Britain, Sami
Khiyami, was quoted by Ma'ariv on
Tuesday as telling a conferen c . e in
London. "There would be no problem
with Israelis being there toe
The remarks appeared to signal an
enhancement of recent Syrian peace
overtures toward Israel. Syria condi-
tions talks on a complete return of the
Golan, which Israel captured in the
1967 Six-Day War and annexed.
Damascus did not immediately
confirm Khiyami's comments. Israel
has said it is interested in new nego-
tiations, but without preconditions.
Some 20,000 Israelis live on the
Golan.

Washington — Doreen Hermelin
of Bingham Farms became the first

election to the presidency was unani-
mously endorsed by the members of
the newly merged organization.
On Jan. 1, American ORT and
Women's American ORT officially
united in a move to provide more
support to the ORT global network of
schools and programs.
Also elected to the National Board
of Directors were Craig Singer of
Bloomfield Hills, Vice President Rob
Colburn and Dr. Conrad Giles of
Bloomfield Hills and Nicole Kovacs of

The recently resigned head of
the United Nations mission in
Jerusalem charges that the world
body has become a servant of
Israeli policy. Alvaro de Soto said
the U.N. has become afraid to take
action contrary to the official posi-
tions of Israel.

The Answer

De Soto's inappropriate comments
come at a time when U.N.-Israel
relations are warming because of
the pronouncements and actions
of new Secretary General Ban Ki
Moon. His first months on the
job, he's working to reverse a long
history of disproportionate U.N.
support for the Palestinians and
criticism of Israel.
