he Tauber Initiative for
the Advancement of
Ethiopian Youth — in
higher education and in Israeli
society — is being launched
by Tel Aviv
University with
the assistance of
a donation from
Joel Tauber of
Southfield.
A national
Jewish communal
leader, Tauber
Joel Tauber
is committed to
promoting emigration to Israel
of distressed Jewish populations,
especially those in Ethiopia. He
played a central role in Operation
Solomon, which brought 14,000
Ethiopian Jews to Israel in 1991.
Through the five-year Tauber
Initiative, Tel Aviv University will
create a coordinated continuum of
educational activities for hundreds
of Ethiopian youth, from junior
high through university studies.
The initiative will include a new
program called Reaching Higher,
helping young Ethiopians with
intensive preparation for college
admission exams. It will be taught
with the assistance of Tel Aviv
University students and staff.
The Tauber Initiative also will
provide post-doctoral fellowships
for two Ethiopian researchers. Tel
Aviv University's existing programs
for Ethiopian youth also will be
expanded.
On May 13, during TAU's annual
board of governors meeting, Joel
Tauber was awarded an honorary
doctorate in tribute to his leader-
ship and his "special contribution
to the Jewish people, the State of
Israel and Tel Aviv University."
From 2002-2006, Tauber served
as national chairman of Tel Aviv
University's American Council.
He has served as chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal and of United
Jewish Communities. He recently
headed the $160 million Operation
Promise Campaign to provide funds
for the immigration and absorption
of Ethiopians to Israel.
