Falwell Was Pro-Israel

The Rev. Jerry Falwell,
Washington, JTA
like his beloved phrase "Judeo-Christian
nation," drew mixed feeling among Jews.
Rev. Falwell, the televangelist who
helped steer America rightward when
he founded the Moral Majority nearly
30 years ago, died May 15 in Lynchburg,
Va., on the campus of Liberty University,
which he founded. He was 73.
Statements from Jewish leaders about
his death were duly respectful of a man
who loved Israel, but were qualified also

ALEXANDER WOLK, 92, of Oak Park
and Boca Raton, Fla., died Jan. 10, 2007, in
his Florida home under the care and kind-
ness of Hospice by the Sea.
He was a World War II veteran, having
served his country well for 31/2 years.
Alexander is survived by his beloved
wife of 64 years. Tessie (Sweet) Wolk;
daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and
Joe Longato, Madeline and Fred Hoenow,

by his embrace of values that alienated
most American Jews.
"I admired Rev. Falwell's understanding
that despite our differences, there were
areas of agreement between us, above all
our deep and profound commitment to
the safety and well-being of the State of
Israel," said Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of
the Union for Reform Judaism.
Falwell was among the first evangeli-
cal leaders to make clear that presidential
candidates must show deference to the
U.S.-Israel alliance if they wanted his
constituency's support.
"It is my belief that the Bible Belt in
America is Israel's only safety belt right
now," Rev. Falwell told CBS News in 2002.
Rev. Falwell had an close relationship
with Israeli prime minister Benjamin
Netanyahu, who rankled U.S. Jews by
embracing the evangelist so readily.
Rev. Falwell's passing means "one less
important voice of support at a time when
Israel needs all the support it can get in a
world hostile toward it and getting more
hostile:' said Mort Klein, leader of the
Zionist Organization of America.
