Help Fight
Cystic Fibrosis

Keith Mandell of West Bloomfield
is 17 and has cystic fibrosis. It has
been a challenging year. He has
been hospitalized many times with
pneumonia and pancreatitis. He
has received intravenous treatment
24 hours a day.
But "with the medical treatments
I have been receiving:' he said, "I
have been able to participate in
many activities like a normal teen-
ager.
He's asking the commu-
nity to join "Team Keith" at 9 a.m.
Saturday, May 6, at Drake Park in
West Bloomfield for Great Strides,
the annual CF walk. "If I could have
one wish, it would be to get rid of
this disease he said.
CF is the No. 1 genetic killer of
children and young adults in the
U.S. It produces a heavy mucous
that clogs the lungs and nasal pas-
sages and inhibits proper function-
ing of other organs. About 30,000
Americans have CF and 10 million
are carriers of the CF gene. The dis-
ease is non-communicable.
With the help of the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation and other sup-
porters, scientists have located the
CF gene and are working to find
a cure. In addition to conducting
gene therapy studies, new drugs
and treatments are now being
tested.
"Working as a team;' said Keith's
mother, Nancy, "we can give Keith
and many others with CF the
quality of life and the future they
deserve
