A Day To Remember
The Detroit Jewish community
will commemorate Israel's fallen
heroes and victims of terror at a
service sponsored by the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
on Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Day of
Remembrance, Sunday, April 22, at
7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield.
The program, free and open to the
public, will include a candlelighting
ceremony and memorial service
recalling those who have given
their lives for Israel's independence.
Victims of the Second Lebanon
War and the MIAs and POWs of the
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also will
be remembered. An officer from the
Israel Defense Forces will represent
the military and speak at the cer-
emony.
The Yom HaZikaron program is
modeled after the community pro-
grams held in Israel honoring the
sons and daughters of Israel's heroes
who have given their lives as well
as those who live on with courage
and hope. One of the most moving
moments of the program will be a
minute of silent reflection while a
siren is sounded.
For information, contact Jason
Charnas, (248) 642-1645.
Another Yom HaZikaron program
will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday,
April 23, at the Jewish Community
Center in Oak Park. The program
is run by the Kollel Torah MiTzion,
with sponsorship from Congregation
Beth Shalom, the JCC, Temple
Emanu-El, Yeshivat Akiva, Young
Israel Council of Metropolitan
Detroit, Young Israel of Oak Park
and Young Israel of Southfield.
Charge is $10 per person; $36 per
family. Light refreshments will be
served.
To reserve tickets, call Cheryl
Jerusalem at (248) 544-8686 or e-
mail karenalpiner@comcast.net .
The celebration continues with
a Yom HaAtzmaut (Israel Day of
Independence) concert featuring
popular Jewish bands Heedoosh
and Blue Fringe on Tuesday, April
24, at Yeshivat Akiva, 21100 W. 12
Mile, Southfield. Tickets are $8
for students up to age 18, $15 for
adults, and include an afterglow
featuring Israeli-style salads and
desserts. Doors open at 6 p.m.;
concert at 6:30 p.m. The concert is
sponsored by Akiva, Keter Torah,
Kollel Torah MiTzion and the Yount
Israel Metropolitan Council. For
more information, call Akiva at
(248) 386-1625.
