The Grand Rapids Ballet Company performs Where the Wild Things Are.

As Woolf's compositions gained
attention, the number of his commis-
sions expanded, and he became more
involved with combining electronic
sounds and musical instruments.
Among the prestigious groups per-
forming his works are the Chamber
Music Society of Lincoln Center,
Seattle Symphony, New Millennium
Ensemble and the Pittsburgh New
Music Ensemble.
The range of Woolf's work is wide,
reaching from the film score for
American Psycho to a Pied Piper
story for the children's concert group
Tales & Scales. He currently is doing
a solo violin piece as background for
a movie about Tibetan refugee camps
in India.
"I use both piano and computer
when I compose,' says Woolf, married
to contemporary pianist Kathleen
Supove."For the Sendak piece, I
worked a lot at the computer in a
small home studio. I have a grand
piano in another room, where there
also is a violin, electric guitar and
other instruments.
"I prefer to write in the morning.
The main thing for me when I'm
composing is to really be isolated. For

Where the Wild Things Are, I kept
looking through the book. I talked
with Sendak, and we discussed each
page.
Woolf vacations in Michigan every
summer, joining his parents, Jackie
and Elroy Woolf, at their place in
Charlevoix. His folks, now spending
most of the year in Florida, were active
in the Birmingham Temple as all three
of their sons were growing up.
"My wife and I like to go out to
other art forms when we're not busy
with our own work," Woolf says. "I'm
lucky that friends from high school
live in my Brooklyn neighborhood.
That's how I wound up here."

Where the Wild Things Are will be
performed 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,
March 28, in the Cobb Great Hall
of the Wharton Center for the
Performing Arts on the Michigan
State University campus in East
Lansing, $11-$27; (517) 432-2000.
It also will be presented 11 a.m.
Friday and 2 and 5 p.m. Saturday,
March 30-31, at the Detroit Opera
House,1526 Broadway, $20; (313)
237-7464.
