DR. JAN WINKELMAN, 64, of
Ann Arbor, died March 8, 2007. A
neuro-opthalmologist, he was a true
Renaissance man. He first played
jazz trumpet as a child, continuing
through high school and college where
his band played "nearly 100 gigs." Still
playing his horn and taking lessons
until his death, he was enthralled by
his passion for music, especially jazz.
Serving as sports editor of the

his days at the University of Michigan;

cially basketball, never left him.
He went to Washington University
in St. Louis, Mo., to receive his doctor
of medicine degree and followed that
with training in neuro-opthalmology,
a profession that he truly loved.
Serving in the U.S. Navy preceded
his arrival in Ann Arbor in 1975. He
was also a master gardener and had
a strong interest in photography and
modern art. Dr. Winkelman loved
travel, often with his family, and some-
times with each son separately. He and
his beloved Sarajane especially enjoyed
trips to the south of France, St. Martin
and the Mediterranean. They were
each other's soulmate. He treasured his
grandchildren, who "lit up his life".
Dr. Winkelman's professionalism
was balanced by his warmth towards
his patients. He was dearly loved by
his patients in his neuro-opthalmol-
ogy practice and made a personal con-
nection with so many of them. One
of the most rewarding experiences of
his life was volunteering on a medical
mission in the Marshall Islands in the
South Pacific, performing cataract sur-
geries for 12 hours a day, giving sight
to many. This kind and gentle man
will be missed by all who knew him.
Dr. Winkelman is survived by his
wife, Sarajane Winkelman of Ann
Arbor; sons and daughters-in-law,
Dr. Michael Winkelman of Johnson,
Vt., Larry and Julie Winkelman
of Farmington Hills, Jeffrey and
Keren Winkelman of Tucson, Ariz.;
stepchildren, Jill and Craig Levine
of Merrick, N.Y., David Silver of
Oakland, Calif.; grandchildren, Alex,
Max and Abby Winkelman, Joshua,
Samantha and Rylie Levine; mother,
Beryl Winkelman of West Bloomfield;
brother and sister-in-law, Ned and
Joan Winkelman; sister and brother-
in-law, Harriet Winkelman and
Bob Stewart of Seattle; stepbrother
and sister-in-law, Eric and Barbara
Winkelman; brothers-in-law, Bruce
Serwin and Dr. Richard Serwin. He
was preceded in death by his father,
Dr. Louis Zlatkin; his adopted father,
Isadore Winkelman; his grandson,
Robbie Levine; and his stepsister,
Margot Proctor.
Interment at Arborcrest Cemetery.
