JAN WINKELMAN, 64, of Ann Arbor, died March 8, 2007. A neuro-opthalmologist, he was a true Renaissance man. He first played jazz trumpet as a child, continuing through high school and college where his band played "nearly 100 gigs." Still playing his horn and taking lessons until his death, he was enthralled by his passion for music, especially jazz. Serving as sports editor of the Michigan Daily was a highpoint of his days at the University of Michigan; and his love of Michigan sports, espe- The Chapel that recognizes each family's individual needs. cially basketball, never left him. He went to Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., to receive his doctor of medicine degree and followed that with training in neuro-opthalmology, a profession that he truly loved. Serving in the U.S. Navy preceded his arrival in Ann Arbor in 1975. He was also a master gardener and had a strong interest in photography and modern art. Dr. Winkelman loved travel, often with his family, and some- times with each son separately. He and his beloved Sarajane especially enjoyed trips to the south of France, St. Martin and the Mediterranean. They were each other's soulmate. He treasured his grandchildren, who "lit up his life". Dr. Winkelman's professionalism was balanced by his warmth towards his patients. He was dearly loved by his patients in his neuro-opthalmol- ogy practice and made a personal con- nection with so many of them. One of the most rewarding experiences of his life was volunteering on a medical mission in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific, performing cataract sur- geries for 12 hours a day, giving sight to many. This kind and gentle man will be missed by all who knew him.
