died Feb. 8, 2007.
He graduated
from undergradu-

State University
Schechter
and then received a

counseling also from Wayne State. He
taught at Meadowlake, Walnut Lake
and Hampton Elementary, but his life
goal was to own a summer camp. He
worked at Camp Tanuga for his men-
tor, Bernie Friedman.
His dream was fulfilled, as he
became founder and co-owner of
Camp Walden with his partner, Larry
Stevens. The first year, his mother
strongly persuaded her friends to send
25 campers to attend and he borrowed
the money from his father to keep it
running. He ran the camp from 1960
to 1990 and finally had over 60 build-
ings and 850 campers a year. He also
developed and ran Winter Walden Ski
Camp Program.
Ultimately thousands of children
attended the camp. His influence was
so strong that the alumni put together
their own reunion and at a special
ceremony honored him and his part-
ner. They shared their feelings that
he was an uncle, brother and father
figure to them all. His son produced a -
television documentary titled A Good
Name based on Mr. Schechter and
profiled his special relationship with
his three brothers.
He was also a longtime and active
member of the Jewish Community
Center and was known as "Uncle
