Kugels, Knishes And
Kreplach, Oh My!

t took 40 pounds of flour and120
dozen eggs for 70 families to cre-
ate recipes for the Jan. 14 "Kugels,
Knishes and Kreplach" at Congregation
B'nai Moshe in West Bloomfield.
Inspired by Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's Shalom Family,
and led by Chef Mimi Markofsky of Elite
Kosher Catering in West Bloomfield, the
event invited families to learn food fea-
tures like what goes into a knish (filled
dumpling) and how to pronounce and roll
foods like kreplach (ravioli-like dump-
lings served in soup).
Jennifer Freedland, Shalom Family event
chair, who helped plan and implement the
event, attended along with her husband
and 2-year-old daughter, Rachel. "Thi.s was
the first time we have cooked together as
a family:' Freedland said. "I think this is
something we will do now."
In addition to preparing and sampling
food delicacies, the 200 moms, dads and
little ones who attended were invited to
participate in a hands-on food coloring
activity and view a showing of the movie
Gefilte Fish.
"Food is an important part of being
Jewish:' Markofsky said. "Try thinking of
a holiday that doesn't include food. Eating
fills people in many ways. Cooking togeth-
er as a family creates strong, positive
Jewish memories that will last a lifetime."
Added Lisa Soble Siegmann, director
of Jewish Federation's Jewish Experiences
for Families, "My grandmother didn't
really write recipes down. She tasted the
mix or felt the consistency. So I asked to
watch her make her famous strudel and
she let me help. Cooking with her is such a
positive memory for me, and I carry that
memory with me."
