Ban Trans Fat?

Some local restaurants already use heart-healthier cooking oils.

p

OTPOURRI ...
Food writers everywhere like
Sylvia Rector at the Detroit Free
Press have joined in the battle for more
public awareness of trans fat's health danger.
"Whether Oakland County eventually
bans the use of trans fat in its 4,000-plus
restaurants, as one county commissioner
said she would like,' writes Sylvia, "health
officials are virtually unanimous: Trans
fats are bad news for our heart health"
New York City for one has already
adopted a zero trans fat policy, and major
restaurants everywhere are beginning to
follow suit.
Restaurant owners here like Ron Asmar
at Vineyards, Farmington Hills, and Gene
Woo at Hoa Hoa, Novi, among others, con-
tinue to wage a stringent fight against its
use ... The Shirlee Bloom and Deli Basket
divisions at Vineyards as well as Hoa Hoa
are all trans-fat-free ... except, possibly, for
tricklings that may be present naturally.
Read labels, folks ... Amounts of trans
fat now must be listed on all food nutrition
tabs in stores ... along with the presence
of the bad-fat hydrogenated or partially
hydrogenated vegetable oils, which are
man-made forms of saturated fat, created
when food manufacturers add hydrogen to
increase shelf life of processed foods.
