nswer: Dear Aaron, Sure,
I'd like to comment on it.
To very briefly summa-
rize the (10,000 word) article: Mr.
Pollan argues that various "insti-
tutional imperatives" of the
-4-- food industry, nutritional
science, and journalism
have led to a "Conspiracy
of Confusion," giving rise
to the ideology of "Nutri-
tionism" (not to be con-
fused with "nutrition"),
which he defines as
(I'm paraphrasing) "the
widely shared but unex-
/ amined assumption that
/ the key to understanding
food is the nutrient."
Pollan further argues that current
nutrient analysis/marketing greatly
oversimplifies the complexity of
food and its relationship to people,
resulting in misleading conclusions
about food and health. Pollan's
abbreviated conclusion: "Eat food,
not too much, mostly plants."
I found the article very interesting
and provocative, and I highly rec-
ommend reading it. One important
caveat: just because nutrition sci-
ence doesn't have all the answers
yet is no reason to disregard it.
Common sense and good judgment
play an important role, too.
