To very briefly summa- rize the (10,000 word) article: Mr. Pollan argues that various "insti- tutional imperatives" of the -4-- food industry, nutritional science, and journalism have led to a "Conspiracy of Confusion," giving rise to the ideology of "Nutri- tionism" (not to be con- fused with "nutrition"), which he defines as (I'm paraphrasing) "the widely shared but unex- / amined assumption that / the key to understanding food is the nutrient." Pollan further argues that current nutrient analysis/marketing greatly oversimplifies the complexity of food and its relationship to people, resulting in misleading conclusions about food and health. Pollan's abbreviated conclusion: "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants." I found the article very interesting and provocative, and I highly rec- ommend reading it. One important caveat: just because nutrition sci- ence doesn't have all the answers yet is no reason to disregard it. Common sense and good judgment play an important role, too. — Barbara Beznos, Registered Dietitian Direct Aour Questions For Barb Switchboard: (248) 354-6060 And Counseling Inquiries To: General News: (248) 351-5144 Business News: (248) 351-5148 Arts News: (248) 351-5142 Circulation: (248) 351-5174 Retail Ads: (248) 351-5151 Classified Ads: (248) 351-5100 SOMIT Of I, IVORSAOKA/ ..,+A.1, ‘ 41 :s 7 "a C ipilP ■ 1161 \111 6 ues- tion: Dear Bar id you read the recent, lengthy ar- ticle in the New York Times Magazine, "The Age Of Nutrition- ism/Unhappy Meals," by Michael Pollan?
