Schwartz highlighted Temple
Israel's 10th annual Book Fair Dec. 10-
14 in West Bloomfield.
Schwartz teaches English at the
University of Missouri in St. Louis.
He received the Sydney Taylor Book
Award for The Diamond Tree:
Jewish Tales from Around the
World and the Sydney Taylor Honor
Award for The Sabbath Lion.
During several presentations
throughout the week, he shared his
stories with Temple Israel's Early
Childhood Center families and kin-
dergarten-12th grade religious school
students.
On Dec. 14, children ages 6 and
younger had the opportunity to cele-
brate Chanukah with simian children's
book character Curious George. More
than 400 children, along with their
parents and grandparents, lit the
menorah with Cantor
Michael Smolash,
enjoyed crafts, lis-
tened to a Curious
George story and had
their picture taken
with Curious George.
"Cantor Smolash
was great and the
picture with Curious
George and the
frame was fabulous:'
said parent Jacqui
Gretzinger. "My daughter, Amanda,
is giving it to my husband tomorrow
night as one of her Chanukah gifts to
him."
Winners of the annual bookmark
contest also were announced. Fourth-
grader Katie Rothstein received the
grand psrize for her design featuring
children's hands reaching out to touch
the Torah with the caption "Read
— It's a gift from God."
Age-group winners and honor-
able mentions were awarded to Emily
Abrams, Drew Anderson, Annabel
Berlin, Kyle Coden, Jade Fantich,
Benjamin Fellows, Anthony Fink,
Jacob Fishkind, Andrea Freedland,
Emma Green, Rachel Gringlas, Bella
Jacobson, Ava Janowitz, Madi Kraus,
Jake Lefkofsky, Jordyn Plotnick,
Stephanie Podolsky, Ava Scott, Allison
Van Der Aue, Lauren Watsky and
Lowell Wolfe.
In addition to the presentations, the
book fair included hundreds of new
Jewish books and Chanukah merchan-
dise for readers of all ages. L
