Reading Fun Temple Israel's book fair combines Chanukah, crafts and storytelling. Amber Gilmore Special to the Jewish News S toryteller and award-winning children's author Howard Schwartz highlighted Temple Israel's 10th annual Book Fair Dec. 10- 14 in West Bloomfield. Schwartz teaches English at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. He received the Sydney Taylor Book Award for The Diamond Tree: Jewish Tales from Around the World and the Sydney Taylor Honor Award for The Sabbath Lion. During several presentations throughout the week, he shared his stories with Temple Israel's Early Childhood Center families and kin- dergarten-12th grade religious school students. On Dec. 14, children ages 6 and younger had the opportunity to cele- brate Chanukah with simian children's book character Curious George. More than 400 children, along with their parents and grandparents, lit the menorah with Cantor Michael Smolash, enjoyed crafts, lis- tened to a Curious George story and had their picture taken with Curious George. "Cantor Smolash was great and the picture with Curious George and the frame was fabulous:' said parent Jacqui Gretzinger. "My daughter, Amanda, is giving it to my husband tomorrow night as one of her Chanukah gifts to him." Winners of the annual bookmark contest also were announced. Fourth- grader Katie Rothstein received the grand psrize for her design featuring children's hands reaching out to touch the Torah with the caption "Read — It's a gift from God." Age-group winners and honor- able mentions were awarded to Emily Abrams, Drew Anderson, Annabel Berlin, Kyle Coden, Jade Fantich, Benjamin Fellows, Anthony Fink, Jacob Fishkind, Andrea Freedland, Emma Green, Rachel Gringlas, Bella Jacobson, Ava Janowitz, Madi Kraus, Jake Lefkofsky, Jordyn Plotnick, Stephanie Podolsky, Ava Scott, Allison Van Der Aue, Lauren Watsky and Lowell Wolfe.
