Paula Silverman and Rebecca Friedman

Steve Stein

p

aula Silverman and Rebecca
Friedman are as different
as, well, night and day. But
that's a big reason why they made up a
successful No. 2 doubles team this fall
for the Division 1 state champion Ann
Arbor Huron High School girls' tennis
squad.
"Rebecca is calm and I'm intense,"
Silverman said. "When we had prob-
lems, it was usually my fault. Our
coach uses the analogy of a marriage
when he talks about doubles teams.
He says there are always going to be
fights, but you still love each other."
Huron Coach John Veit said he
paired Silverman, a junior, with
Friedman, a freshman, because of
their contrasting tennis styles and
personalities. "Paula is aggressive
and dynamic. Rebecca is steady and
reliable," Veit said. "When you get a
combination like that, each player has
a role on the team. There's a division
of labor."
Silverman and Friedman went 18-
7. They didn't play together for three
weeks at mid-season while Silverman
was sidelined with tendonitis in her
shoulder. After Silverman returned,
the duo finished second at region-
als, earned a No. 4 seed at the state
tournament and made it to the state
quarterfinals.

"As the season went on, you could
tell that Rebecca was getting more
confident," Silverman said.
"I thought we worked well together:'
Friedman said. "I did my best to set up
Paula's shots, to take advantage of her
aggressive play"
Silverman and Friedman both
attended Ann Arbor's Tappan
Middle School and play tennis at the
Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti. But they
didn't know each other well before this
season.
It's doubtful they'll be paired on a
Huron doubles team next year. Veit
said there will be an opening at No.
4 singles, and both girls have a good
chance of taking the spot.
Former Huron girls' tennis star
Nurit Weizman was a 2006 Jewish
News High School Athlete of the
Year and the winner of a Bill Hertz
Memorial Scholarship. Weizman
played No. 1 singles for Huron for four
years, helping the River Rats win the
state championship in 2004.

On The Run

Soccer is perfect for Josh Kazdan's ten-
nis game. "All that running in soccer
keeps me in great shape for tennis:'
Kazdan said. "In tough tennis matches,
the player in the best physical shape
has the advantage. I feel I can beat
anybody in a third set!'
Kazdan is a Birmingham Groves
