Israel.
But Netanyahu claims it's the
other way around. He said militant
Islamists have hated the West for
hundreds of years before Israel
existed, that they hate Israel because
of the West.

No Clear Solution
But how to deal with the problem
was unclear.
And while Netanyahu does not
agree with making a deal with
Hamas and Palestinians, Olmert and
members of his cabinet looked to
working with them towards peace.
"As Israel focuses its attention on
our Palestinian neighbors, we owe
it to the future generations of both
Israelis and Palestinians to dedicate
ourselves to finding a means for
progress," Olmert said. "A choice
needs to be made. We can embrace
hope; and together we will revital-
ize our two peoples and the entire
region, providing for our children

that only comes with security and
understanding, or we can be gripped
by fear and conflict in which we ruin
not only ourselves but the future for
generations to come'

does not recognize the existence of
Israel and promotes future attacks,
they gave differing opinions on the
relationship between Hamas and
Iran.

own people,' Olmert said. "They
must rise to the challenges of gov-
erning and lead their people without
succumbing to the difficulties of
uniting a fragmented populace or
to extremists who favor a culture of
hate:'
Netanyahu said peace is depen-
dent on Iran.
"The assumption is that if we
cut a deal with the Palestinians we
somehow influence Iran, [but] it's
actually the other way around',' he
said. "If we want to get to a solution
with our Palestinian neighbors, we
have to neutralize the Iranian and
militant Islamic threat that is sweep-
ing Palestinian society and Middle
Eastern politics:'
Regardless, both Israeli lead-

Palestinians won't end the threat of
extremist Muslims, particularly of
