THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

Rose By Any Other Name

Enjoy Mrs. Guttman's delicacies at soon-to-be-renamed Tony's Embers Deli.

p

OTPOURRI
A smart move to pre-
vent further confusion
soon takes hold as Ember's Deli,
on Orchard Lake Road, north of
Commerce Road, Orchard Lake,
adopts a new name before the
year's end.
Tony's Embers, as it will be
called, is owned by personable
man and wife, Tony and Sonja
Perkovic, whose very clean delica-
tessen has gained much populari-
ty ... not unlike that once enjoyed
at the same site by a predecessor,
Dave's Deli.
- Another Ember's Deli, in West
Bloomfield, owned by Tony's cous-
in, will no doubt benefit as well.
It also puts to rest the con-
stant mix-up as to where Rose
Guttman, former co-owner with
husband, Irving, of the former
big favorite, Irving's Deli, is doing
her masterful food preparation
these days ... The answer won't
be just "Ember's Deli" anymore,
and people won't have to scratch
their heads in wonderment of
which one ... Now they'll know
where her delicious Hungarian,
Romanian, Jewish, etc., cooking
styles can be gotten ... Stuffed
peppers and cabbages, roasted
chicken, beef short ribs, vegetar-
ian chopped liver, hamburger
steak, goulash, etc.
Also her excellent corned beef
hash, gefilte fish, pickled trout
and so much more that Rose is
much noted for ... Remember her

wonderful apple strudel, banana
nut cake, brownies, marble and
four-layer cake? ... They are all
at the soon-to-be-renamed, very
clean Tony's Ember's, where Rose's
cholent, too, can be gotten by
ordering ahead.
MORE WORD ON rumors
about the three coming restaurant
tenants to be at the former Wing
Hong, and later Pier One, loca-
tion on 14 Mile and Orchard Lake
Road, Farmington Hills ... One of
the locale's restaurant operations
won't be P.F. Chang's China Bistro
as alleged, but a well-founded
source indicates that it may be a
small casual Pei Wei Asian Diner,
which is owned by the P.F. Chang's
chain ... And one of the other
restaurants is said to be a Potbelly
Sandwich Works.
NO SECRET WHY Pegasus
Taverna has ranked among the
finest in Detroit's Greektown since
it opened ... And that it is prob-
ably the largest Greek restaurant
in Detroit's landmark operation,
seating over 300 in two rooms.
A huge word — fresh —
stands out as a Pegasus trademark
that continually gives it high cre-
dence among Detroit's authentic
Greek restaurants ... The huge
turnover of so many seats pre-
vents problems with leftover food
... Nothing prepared is kept for
the next day, with all given to feed
hungry at charitable institutions
for the needy.
One of owner Jim Papas' smart

moves as an
astute busi-
nessman was
to surround
himself with
key person-
nel ... People
like Yiannis
Papaioannou,
have been
there since its
doors opened on Monroe, starting
as a highly regarded waiter and a
year later becoming manager ...
His knowledgeable reputation as
the evening supervisor is of much
Greektown note.
Pegasus celebrated its 25th
anniversary in May, and the World
Series was indicative of how
popular it has become not only
here but in so many other cities
around the country ... Celebrities
from film, showbiz, TV sports, etc.
had no question of where to go
while in Detroit ... Jim Papas and
Pegasus Taverna enjoy this reputa-
tion with much pride.
FIFTH ANNUAL WINE
Tasting Dinner by Mario's
Restaurant, Second Blvd., Detroit,
is Thursday, Nov. 16, 7 p.m. ... $50
includes wine pairing with each
course, live entertainment and
dessert table.
THE MANY FOLKS with
a love affair for them are thrilled
that the Florida stone crab season
is here ... This is the 16th season
that the luscious crustaceans are
being sold at O'Brien's Crabhouse

in Auburn Hills ... They are
jet-flown in from the Florida
docks and served by O'Brien's
owner-chef Dan Dunsky, with his
housemade mustard sauce and
sweet potato fries tossed with
cinnamon and sugar.
THIS SEASON'S FIRST
meeting of the Michigan Club in
Florida is Thursday, Nov. 16, 7:30
p.m., at Delray's South Florida
Civic Center.
FEW SOCIAL EVENTS
could hardly match the amaz-
ing 42nd anniversary extrava-
ganza set up by John and Bergy
Darakjian and sons Armen and
Ara ... Over 400 attending were
shocked at the 7,000-foot com-
pletely enclosed tent that filled
an entire side of the Darakjian
Jewelers parking area on
Northwestern Highway, Southfield
... An interior that looked much
like an addition to the free-stand-
ing building was filled with sta-
tions of food, two dance floors,
leather sofas, sit-down tables
and chairs, island tables, side
and overhead lighting, planters,
a disc jockey, wooden doorways,
cocktail bar, etc. ... Passed hors
d'oeuvres were both inside and
outside, and Farmington Hills-
based JARC (an organization aid-
ing the developmentally disabled)
was the sole recipient of a portion
of sales made within the store.
A far cry from John Darakjian's
first site at the Metropolitan
Building in Detroit.

WHEN IT COMES TO
knocking down wooden pins,
Keith Kingston is a chip off a cou-
ple of family blocks ... His late
father, Irving Kingston, was a fine
bowler years back at the Bowl-
0-Drome and Dexter Recreation,
both on Dexter Blvd. in Detroit
... Keith's grandfather, Maurice
Kingston, used to knock 'em
down in a Jewish War Veterans
league at the former Yorba Linda
in Royal Oak.
His recent 300 score, anchor-
ing the 12 Mile and Halsted Leo's
Coney Island team, was Keith's
third perfect game ... Coming
in sanctioned league play while
hitting a whopping 833 series
(266-267-300) at Country Lanes,
Farmington Hills, he'll receive
300 and 800 rings from the U.S.
Bowling Congress.
Keith's other 12-strikers were
before the bowling seasons in
1993 and this past February ...
His average for 24 games this year
is 237 ... Clients say he's not bad
either as a CPA with Rottman,
Kingston, Neuvirth in Farmington
Hills.
CONGRATS ... To Elaine
Bass on her birthday ... To Dina
Amcheslaysky on her birthday ...
To Caryn Jaeger on her birthday.
