Jewish Committee has decided not to.
"It is regrettable that they have
entered into an agreement with
Bridges, a channel that features
religious leaders that are outspoken
in their support of Hezbollah and
Ahmadinejad.'s outrageous state-
ments," Shapiro said..
She says CLAL has a "lack of expe-
rience and information" in intergroup
relations and is lending credibility to
extremists that she doesn't believe are
reaching out in good faith.
Rabbi Hirschfield, an Orthodox
rabbi with degrees from the Jewish
Theological Seminary and the
University of Chicago, acknowledges
that Imam Elahi has said some prob-
lematic. things but says he was never
inappropriate with him.
Rabbi Hirschfield termed not talk-
ing for fear of legitimizing a dialogue
partner a "death spiral:' comparing it
to Orthodox Jews who refuse to dia-
logue with Conservative and Reform
Jews because it might legitimize
them. "There is no way out of that
thinking; we dare not do this in the
20th century:' the rabbi said.
Saying he respects the AJC's work
and its decision not to talk with
Imam Elahi, he nonetheless main-
tains that "precisely because there are
people we don't want to talk with, we
must nurture the capacity of others
to talk with them.
"Words aren't as bad as it gets:'
Rabbi Hirschfield said. "Shooting is
as bad as it gets. Having to bury my
students in Jerusalem because they
were Jewish on the wrong day, that's
as bad as it gets."
At the same time, he doesn't
believe that everyone is a partner for
dialogue, or that every group should
see things as he does. Explaining that
he had the chance to meet with Iran's
Ahmadinejad when he was recently
in New York, the rabbi declined
•
the invitation. "If others can make
something good of it, fine; but I just
can't do that:' he said, adding that the
urge to punch him in the nose would
interfere with productive dialogue. 11
