based in Buffalo, N.Y. The first episode,
"God in the American Public Square,'
will be screened at the Islamic House
of Wisdom, 22575 Ann Arbor Trail,
Dearborn Heights, beginning at 7:30
p.m. Nov. 2. The screening is free and
open to the public.
The program deals with general ques-
tions of the importance of religion, its
role in promoting both violence and
peace and its role in American life.
Specific issues include evolution and
creation, abortion, forgiveness and
repentance, Jerusalem, secularism and
fundamentalism and women, among
other topics.
Building Bridges was conceived by
Rabbi Brad Hirschfield, vice president
of CLAL — the National Jewish Center
for Learning and Leadership, a New
York-based Jewish educational think
tank. Each episode is hosted by Ahmed
Soliman, Bridges TV senior news anchor
and producer, and includes Rabbi
Hirschfield, the Rev. Francis X. Mazur of
the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo
and one of four imams.
Two of the imams are from Metro

Detroit: Imam
Mohamad Ali
Elahi of the
Islamic House
of Wisdom and
. Imam Abdulah
Bey El Amin,
an African-
American
Christian con-
vert to Islam
Rabbi Hirschfield
who is director
of the, Council of Islamic Organizations
of Michigan. Imam El Amin participates
in the first episode. Imam Elahi is in four
episodes..
The American Jewish Committee
works with Imam El Amin, but is
concerned that
Imam Elahi is
participating and
that the opening
program will be
at his mosque.
Imam Elahi has
offended many Jews
and others with
his rhetoric about
Israel, Zionism and Jewish control of
the news media as well as his apologet-
ics for Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad.
Imam Elahi was prominent during
the summer's pro-Hezbollah rallies
in Dearborn,
writes against
Israel, Zionism
and U.S. support
for Israel in his
columns in the
Detroit News,
and his Web
site includes
photos of him
with Ayatollah

Hussein
Fadlallah, spiritual leader of Hezbollah;
the late Iranian leader Ayatollah
Khomeini, whom he served as Navy
chaplain; former Iranian presidents
Khatemi and Rafsanjani; and Minister
Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam,
among others.
Sharona Shapiro, AJC Michigan direc-
tor, says she respects CLAL, but that this
program "is part of a larger pattern"
whereby "CLAL will reach out to build
bridges with those that the American
