JN
with his three sis-
ters and his mother
to join his father
who had preceded
them. His primary
education was in
the Detroit Public
Schools. He gradu-
ated from Northern
Trattner
High School. He
then attended
the University of Michigan, Columbia
University and Harvard College and
received both his bachelor's and master's
degrees from Wayne State University.
He had a 40-year career as an educa-
tor in the Detroit Schools. He began his
career as an art teacher at Northwestern
High School. Later he became chairman
of the art department at Cass Technical
High School. He served briefly as vice
principal at Cass. The last 10 years of
his career were as director of art educa-
tion for the entire Detroit Public School
System.
After his retirement in 1977, he met
and married Kathleen Kinsler and joined
her at her home in Carmel. They enjoyed
25 years together until Kathleen's death
in 2004. They loved to travel and enjoyed
trips and cruises worldwide. He stayed
in Camel but often spoke of returning to
Detroit to spend his last years.
Former students remember him fondly.
They described him as dynamic, encour-
aging, motivating and knowledgeable
about everything having to do with art.
He had a very positive influence and
inspired many young artists. Some of his
students became successful and famous.
He was a dapper dresser, always wear-
ing a tweed jacket and tie. He was hand-
some and attractive to the ladies. He was
fond of telling stories of his boyhood in
Hungary and Detroit, always finishing the
stories with, "That, wasn't yesterday; that
was the day before."
He was preceded in death by his wife,
Kathleen, and his sisters Helen Salamon
and Olga Rubin. He is survived by his
sister, Elizabeth Altman of Kensington,
Md., many nieces and nephews as well
as grand- and great-grandnieces and
nephews.
