Dear
Barb
a
diabetic. Lately,
I've been
drinking a lot
of coffee after
being told that it's high in antioxi-
dants, plus the caffeine gives me a
"boost." My glucose levels seem to
be erratic. What's up? Sarah.

It is true that some studies
have reported significant
antioxidant presence in
coffee (caffeine's #1 de-
livery mechanism) that
may potentially inhibit
the development of can-
cer and diabete.s.

Bottom line: don't substitute cof-
fee for your fruits and vegetables
(limit your intake to 1 or 2 cups).
In larger quantities, caffeine can be
addictive and lead to serious health
issues. I. hope this helps.

Caffeine has other effects,
too. It can increase hormone
levels (e.g., adrenaline and corti-
sol), which can result in elevated
blood sugar (which may explain
your erratic glucose levels) and
weight gain. Caffeine inhibits the
absorption of the hormone adenos-
ine, which, with adrenaline, can
temporarily increase alertness, but
may interfere with regular sleep.

nswer: Dear Sarah, Caf-
feine is a nervous system
stimulant and is the world's
most widely consumed psychoac-

found in coffee, tea, chocolate
