J oan Cascade has cared for two husbands who

died from cancer. She had little help tending to
her first husband, but Joan received comfort,
kindness and spiritual guidance from the Jewish
Hospice & Chaplaincy Network at the end of her
second husband's life.

Today Joan is one of JHCN's busiest volunteers.

"People don't understand why I do this," she says.
"I wanted to give back. I know exactly where the
family is coming from. They give me a lot more
than I can give them."

ARTHUR KATZEN, 59, of Laguna
Beach, Calif., died Sept. 17, 2006.
He is survived by his brother and
sister-in-law, Al and Linda Katzen of
Commerce Twp.; niece and nephew,
Sheryl Katzen and Jeffrey (Tracey)
Katzen.
Services were held in Laguna Beach.
Contributions may be made to the

IRVING LAWTON, 86, of West
Bloomfield, died Sept. 27, 2006. He
was the retired owner of Bedland at 12
Mile Road and Telegraph. A World War
II veteran, he was also a member of
B'nai B'rith.
Mr. Lawton is survived by his son,
Robert Lawton of West Bloomfield;
sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and
Donald Goldberg of Scottsdale, Ariz. He
was the beloved husband for over 65
years of the late Kathryne Lawton; dear
father of the late Howard Lawton and
the late Stuart Lawton.
Interment at Workmen's Circle
Cemetery. Contributions may be made
to Karmanos Cancer Institute, 4100
John R, Detroit, MI 48201 or a charity
of one's choice. Arrangements by Ira

BERNARD MILLER, 83, of
Southfield, died Oct. 1, 2006.
He is survived
by his beloved wife,

MINNIE MILLER, 88, of
Beachwood, Ohio, died Sept. 30, 2006.
She is survived by her daughters and

LESTER OBERMAN, 84, for-
merly of Sault St. Marie of Lauderhill,
Fla., died, Sept. 17, 2006, following
a four-month battle with cancer. He
made many business and community
leadership contributions in Sault Ste.
Marie as well as during his active
retirement in Lauderhill.
He was born Feb. 4, 1922, in
Patterson, N.J. , and lived in New York
City until his high school graduation,
when he moved to Sault St. Marie.
He graduated from the University of
Michigan in 1943; married the love of
his life, Ruth, and moved to Atlanta, Ga.,
where he spent two years in the Army
Military Police. They returned to Sault
St. Marie in 1946, where he spent the
next 40 years of his life running Barish
Brothers clothing store and raising
four children. While living in the Sault,
he was known for his active involve-
ment in the community, including
membership on the Sault Chamber of
Commerce, serving as president of the
country club and serving on the board
of directors for the Sault Savings Bank.
In addition, Mr. Oberman achieved
the honor of 32nd Degree Mason and
Worshipful Master for the Masonic
Order. He was an avid golfer and found-
ing member of a group he fondly
referred to as the Lunch Bunch. He was
such a regular, he earned the honor of
having his favorite lunch order named
after him: the Obie Sandwich.
In Lauderhill, he held many leader-
ship positions within his condominium
association, including board member,
treasurer and president of the board.
Mr. Oberman enjoyed a full social life
in the Lauderhill area; he was able
to play golf, travel extensively, attend
