Under The Stars
Temple Beth El members and friends
will observe Selichot under the Stars,
Saturday evening, Sept. 16, in the
Bloomfield Township temple's court-
yard.
A dessert reception at 8:30 p.m.
will be followed by a 9 p.m. musical
program with the father-daughter
duo of Steve and Caitlin Klaper. At 10
p.m., Rabbis Daniel Syme and David
Castiglione and Cantorial Soloist
Rachel Gottlieb will lead a Havdalah
and healing service.

West Bloomfield Temple Israel's
"Gesharim" is a group for people who
have converted or are converting to
Judaism, those in interfaith relation-
ships or Jews seeking to learn more
about their religion.
On Thursday, Sept. 21, 7-9 p.m., the
group will explore Rosh Hashanah,
Yom Kippur and Sukkot with Rabbi
Jennifer Tisdale. Participants will
learn to start holiday traditions in
their home.

Gan Goes Bilingual
The Oak Park-based Beth Shalom
Gan Shalom Preschool will introduce
a bilingual Hebrew-English program
for children ages 24 months to 4. The
program, developed in Israel, will be
led by certified preschool instructors
Leslie Fishman and Ronit Goutovich.
Call Susan Gartenberg, (248) 547-

school year begins Sept. 5, with parent
orientation 7 p.m. Sept. 7.

Institute Services
The Sholem Aleichem Institute, a non-
political; secular Jewish organization,
will hold High Holiday services at
Orchard Lake Middle School in West
Bloomfield.
Rosh Hashanah services will be 10
a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23. Kol Nidre will
be 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, with Yom
Kippur services 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2.
Machzorim, developed by members,
include readings, poetry and songs in
English, Yiddish and Hebrew. A choral
group will perform. At Kol Nidre, a
symphonic trio will play.

Talk Focus: Kabbalah

The Shul-Chabad Lubavitch in West
Bloomfield will
host Rabbi Laibl
Wolfe, kabbalistic
master, Sept. 15 - 17.
On Friday
evening, follow-
ing dinner, Rabbi
Wolfe will discuss
"Men, Women and
Kabbalah," focusing
on intimacy, commitment and rela-
tionships.
At noon Saturday, the rabbi will
lead "When the Soul Tricks the Mind,"
mystical songs and spiritual tales.
Sunday's program will cover "The
Kabbalah of Leadership," a seminar to
provide specific tools for compassion-
ate assertiveness through the insights
of Kabbalah.

Youth Welcome

Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak
Park will welcome former members
of any Conservative movement youth
group who are looking for a shul for
the High Holidays.
Someone who is new in town, away
from home or has not vet joined a
synagogue may attend as part of the
United Synagogue of Conservative
Judaism's Project Reconnect.

Visits To Survivors

On Monday, Sept. 18, the next orien-
tation session for the new Yad B'Yad
"Hand in Hand" Program will be held
at the Jewish Family Services, 6555 W.
Maple, in West Bloomfield.
Yad B'Yad provides friendly visitors
for local Holocaust survivors.
People interested in becoming vol-
unteers may call Dr. Charles Silow of
the Program for Holocaust Survivors
and Families, (248) 661-2999, or
Hilary Rotenberg of Jewish Family
Service, (248) 592-2300. Reservations
are required.
If you know of Holocaust survi-
vor who may benefit from having
a friendly visitor, contact Silow or
Rotenberg.
Yad B'Yad is a joint program of the
Jewish Home and Aging Services and
Jewish Family Service. It is made pos-
sible through a grant from the Jewish
Fund.
