Silberberg said the recitation and
"baseless love" are paramount. The
Three Weeks leads to Tisha b'Av,
commemorating Jewish catastrophes
including the destruction of the
Temple.
"The reason for this was based on
hatred that caused destruction," Rabbi
Silberberg said. "So now we must
increase the mitzvahs of love we do
for Jews and all humanity"
The rabbi sees such gatherings as

together in an unprecedented way
from right to left and from all shades
of Judaism. I can't remember a time
since 1967 when we have had a level
of unity with Jews like exists today,"
he said.
He added, "The haftorah we read
this Shabbat tells us we will be
redeemed through justice and char-

psalms and also give extra tzedakah
that will go the Israeli soldiers and

Your Prayers Can Help

Among the psalms Rabbi Silberberg suggests reciting every day is
Psalm 130, which he says is commonly said in times of distress.

solidarity rally at Shaarey Zedek -

In somewhat of an unsettling irony, we are currently in the
midst of a three-week period of communal mourning on the
Jewish calendar, leading up to the historic destruction of
the Temple in Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E.
and by the Romans in 70 C.E. on Tisha b'Av, the ninth of the
Hebrew month of Av, which we will mark in two short weeks
[Aug. 3]. And now we must continue to guard against simi-
lar types of destruction in our day.
Thankfully, if we have learned anything from our history, it is that we
Jews are survivors, and we must and will do whatever it takes to sup-
port and defend our people and our beloved homeland.
We stand together tonight in solidarity, hoping and fighting for peace
because we love life, and we affirm life at every opportunity.
We stand with Israel at this critical time as it fulfills its most basic
responsibility as a democracy: defending the nation and protecting its
citizens. Furthermore, we stand with our government and with Israel
in combating the global threat of terrorism, seeking a true and lasting
peace that will assure secure and defensible borders from this day forth
and for evermore.
