A

kitchen renovation, considered one of the toughest
to live through, was remarkably easy for Jody and
Shelly Mendelson when they contracted Gittleman
Construction Company to redo the heart of their home.
If really was no big deal," said Shelly, "and I think that
was because there wasn't a time that I came into the
kitchen that things weren't moving along." A neat work
site, cleaned up daily, also eased the updating process.
The kitchen and accompanying powder room redo was
the couple's first major project in the four bedroom
Colonial they moved into 12 years ago. Only two
years old when they bought it, the house aged well but
recently we had to make a decision - move or redo."
Happy with the neighborhood and their location, the
couple decided — call Gittleman.
'We had Scott come in and show us what we could do," recalls Shelly. That included replacing dated
laminate countertops and cabinetry with cherrywood and granite and putting color, granite and new
cabinetry into the powder -room.
"I loved working with their designer," said Shelley. "She really helped me a lot, but she let me make
all my own decisions so I got what I really wanted."

Now the Mendelson's and their three daughters Mellissa, Arielle and Erica take a break from their
busy schedules to share cooking duties in the state-of-the-art kitchen... and perhaps ponder future
renovations.

"There's more I would like to do," said Shelly. When she's ready, she'll definitely call Gittleman.
So next time the prospect of an unsettling renovation puts a halt to your dream project, set your
worries aside and rely on Gittleman to get you through.
JUST ASK THE MENDELSON'S.

Jan Rival, M.D., is board-certified
in internal medicine and cardiology
and a member of the Henry Ford
Medical Group. He also is presi-
dent of the Henry Ford Medical
Association.

Raised in a family of doctors in
Czechoslovakia, Dr. Rival never
doubted that he would also become
a physician.

"I remember my father and
grandfather discussing medicine
and the great joy they got out of
caring for patients," he says. "I
wanted to do that, too."

Meet one of the faces of success

THROUGH

He attended Komenski University
Medical School in Bratislava,
remaining on the faculty in
cardiology after his residency. In
1967, he came to the United States
to see how medicine was practiced
in America and completing a
fellowship in cardiology at
Philadelphia General Hospital. The
following year, the Soviet invasion
of Czechoslovakia precipitated his
family members' move to Germany
and Canada. Dr. Rival remained in
the United States and completed a
second fellowship in cardiology at
Wayne State University. He 1969
he joined Henry Ford Hospital.

Fluent in German, Russian, Polish,
Hungarian, Czech, and Slovak, his
linguistic skills enabled him to
recruit medical staff for Henry
Ford from Eastern Europe in the
198os, bringing 30 new physicians
to the health system.

"The doctors were thankful for the
opportunity to work in the U.S.,"
says Dr. Rival. "And we were
pleased to have such knowledge-
able physicians join our medical
group."

Dr. Rival has participated in many
research projects over his 37 years
at Henry Ford, including a study
he recalls on the effect of a preg-
nant woman's measles or other
trauma on her unborn child.
This can result in scoliosis, called
`curvature of the spine', and/or a
`click murmur' heart syndrome, he
explains, but early diagnosis can
lead to successful therapy.

"Participating
in research is a
fantastic expe-
rience," he
says. "You can
apply what you
learn in your
practice.

"I have
remained at
Henry Ford for
so many years
because the doctors share a com-
mitment to practicing medicine by
combining excellence in education,
research and patient care, while
holding each other to the highest
possible standards."

Dr. Rival is also a clinical associate
professor of medicine at the
University of Michigan, and
received its Outstanding Teacher
Award in 1994 for his commitment
to education. This year, he will
receive a Lifetime Achievement
Award from the American College
of Physicians, which honors
doctors for their leadership, as well
as for being advisors and mentors.

"I enjoy the opportunity to teach
residents and learn," he notes.
"The focus of my practice is on
education and patient care. In fact,
at least a dozen Henry Ford
doctors, senior staff members, are
former students of mine.

"I'rn very proud to have two
scholarships in my name," he adds.
"One is a traveling scholarship,
given to a resident in internal
medicine, and one is an award
given to an outstanding resident."

Dr. Rival lives with his wife, Eva, in
Bloomfield Hills. They are affiliat-
ed with Congregation Shir Shalom.
Eva, a retired high school teacher
and Holocaust survivor, is a volun-
teer with Jewish Family Services,
assisting the elderly. They have
two adult daughters, both of whom
are graduates of Harvard
University.
