More than 30 people participated in a weekend learning program in
late May at the Kollel of Greater Detroit in Oak Park presented by the
Jerusalem Center for Research: Medicine and Halacha. Lecture topics
included end of life issues, dilemmas of limited or scarce resources and
genetics and medicine, including stem cells, cloning and gene therapy.
Featured guest scholar was Rabbi Yaakov Weiner, dean and rosh kollel of
the Jerusalem center. Major supporters of the program included St. John
Health-Providence Hospital, the Detroit-based medical advocacy organi-
zation AMOD and the Blanche and David Pollack Education Fund at the
Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network.

JARC Honors Supporters
Long-time JARC supporters Sam and
Jean Frankel were feted by JARC at
the 2006 annual meeting. They are
the recipients of the first Norman
G. Wachter Extraordinary Impact
Award, which recognizes a person or
organization's exceptional impact on
JARC's success through deeds and/or
philanthropy.
The Frankels have supported JARC
since the organization's inception in
1969, donating the funds to purchase
the first JARC home in Detroit.
The late Mr. Wachter, was a
JARC founder, past president, and
Development Department staff mem-
ber during his lifetime. Craig Erlich
was elected to a two-year term as
JARC's president. He is a long-time
JARC Board member and is the presi-
dent and CEO of Star Trax, an event
and meeting productions company.
Also elected to leadership posts
are vice presidents, Jeffrey Cohen,
Howard Luckoff, and Larry Shulman;
secretary, Sherri Ketai; treasurer,
Robert Nusbaum.
New first-time JARC Board mem-
bers include Ronald Applebaum,
Dennis Bernard, Kate Bush, Anne
Fleming, Doreen Hermelin, Ronald
Klein, Martin Levinson, Joshua
Linkner, Lisa Pernick and Julie
Skidmore.

Networking Club
Meets Tuesday
Professional Counselor Mildred
Pivoz will conduct Adat Shalom
Synagogue's second Networking
Club meeting on Tuesday, July 18, for
individuals who are actively looking
for jobs or researching the job mar-
ket. Participants learn how to write
resumes and receive tips on how to
network. Materials and resource list-
ings are distributed.
Pivoz is a nationally board certi-
fied professional counselor, who is an
assistant manager at the Michigan
Works Southfield Career Center. A
member of Adat Shalom, she has
helped counsel people in making
appropriate choices in finding the
right job for the last 13 years.
The program is open to the com-
