started out
in the food
business at
age 13, making pizzas
at Gino's in Windsor ...
Today he is still making
the pies, only this time
as the owner of a neigh-
borhood, family Italian
restaurant in another
country.
The large neon sign
at Luigi's Trattoria on
Farmington Road, just south of Grand
River, Farmington, on the south side
of the Village Plaza, is where Dominic
Belcastro will celebrate Luigi's 11th
anniversary in June.
It says much when one of the big-
gest things going for a restaurant is
the look of so many regulars who keep
coming back.
Dom's wife, Vivian, had been told by
a client at the beauty shop where she
worked that Luigi's Bar-B-Q was for
sale ... they had always wanted a res-
taurant of their own ... At first, after
looking at it, he was turned off by the
little respect the place received, until
finally deciding that with proper own-
ership, things could be turned around
... and it might become the kind
of neighborhood restaurant people
would enjoy.
Luigi's Trattoria has since proven his
vision correct with the type of family
casualness and good home-style food
preparations that customers would
return to enjoy, served by waitpersons
who shared his enthusiasm by staying
for long tenures.
Dom has continued the bar-b-q
menu but as a one-pager ... with the
large food variety concentrated on
Italian traditions and specialties, plus
a children's section to round out a
family dining concept he and Vivian
have taken pleasure in owning.
Seating at Luigi's Trattoria is 85 at
booths and tables in one room ...
The restaurant is open for breakfast,
lunch and dinner seven days, Monday-
Thursday, 8 a.m.-9; Friday and
Saturday, 8-10; Sunday, 8-8.
Luigi's Trattoria may seem like
many other small Italian restaurants,
but the difference is apparent in the
good value received ... Dom has kept
his prices down throughout the almost

11 years and maintained a
quality presentation of satisfy-
ing favorites.
Some of the dishes, like
veal marsala, are prepared a
bit differently than at many
.
other places ... Dom's veal
medallions are sauteed with
fresh mushrooms and a sweet
marsala wine, but tossed
together with the fettuccine
... If requested, the dish can
be served with fettuccine on
the side instead ... Same with veal
piccata, veal mercino and the Nonna's
Favorite of medallions sautéed with
fresh mushrooms and spinach.
After the ninth year, Dom did a
thorough remodeling job at Luigi's to
give it a more modern look ... One
wall is brick; booths are high-backed
to assure privacy, and another wall is
dark wood.

It has a full bar with choice wines
by both bottle and glass ... Soups, like .
the regular minestrone and creamy
garlic specialty, are big favorites ...
Also, bottles of olive oil are on each
table for traditional bread dipping,
Dom is an excellent host with a
pleasant smile and gracious hello that
is together with the long-standing
servers to greet customers who enjoy
their many returns.
There are numerous fine things to
say about a family Italian trattoria like
Luigi's ... It is difficult to beat a corn-
bination of good food, good prices and
good service that are together with
utmost cleanliness for a fine-value
experience.
THROUGHOUT THE multitude
of rumors, the tradition so exempli-
fied by late owner Michael Kuchersky
of the Fiddler Restaurant on Orchard
Lake Road, West Bloomfield, continues
with added authentic Russian empha-
sis.
Partner and General Manager
Natan Sologub keeps on operating the
Fiddler as before ... and Chef Vitali
Lobanoff, who came here from Odessa
to run the former Russian Bear kitch-
en in West Bloomfield, now provides
yet more true legitimacy ... Both
are Russian Jews ... The Fiddler in a
couple of months will again reopen
for lunch and additional true Russian
dishes will be added to the menu,
