T
he weather was perfect
and the bagels were
fresh as almost 200
people ran, walked, and dashed
through the Oakland Community
College's Orchard Ridge campus
in Farmington Hills May 7 for a
worthy cause.
A crowd of 308 registered
for the first annual JNCarathon
Race for Hunger, which raised
money for the Berkley-based Yad
Ezra kosher food pantry and the
Detroit-based Gleaner's Food
Bank of Southeastern Michigan.
Maddie Hopp-Storey, 12, of
Huntington Woods, won the 2-
mile event with a time of 16:20.
Dennis Regmont, 37, of Orion
won first place in the men's divi-
sion and third place overall with
a time of 17:11. Doug Bajor, 46,
whose hometown was unlisted,
won the 5-mile event with a
time of 32:48. Michelle Shapiro,
42, whose hometown also was
unlisted, won top female runner
with a time of 38:33.
All participants received a
medal from Tapper's Diamonds
and Fine Jewelry in West
Bloomfield for finishing a 5-mile
or 2-mile run/walk along the
rolling hills within the campus.
A diaper dash was also held for
future Olympians.
A host of volunteers from
Gleaner's and the Jewish News
ensured the event ran smoothly.
Running Fit and its CEO Randy
Step set the course and kept times.
Sponsors included Oakland
A Communication Partner,
Tapper's, Noodles & Co. Asics,
Running Fit, Rock Financial and
the Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit.
The amount of funds raised to
feed the hungry as well as partici-
pants' names and final times will
be reported in the next issue.
