Israeli Holidays

• Yom Hazikaron, Israel
Memorial Day, will be observed
at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 1, at
the Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield. The community
service will commemorate Israel's
fallen heroes and victims of terror.
The program, free and open to
the public, will include a candle-
lighting ceremony and the tradi-
tional Jewish memorial service for
those who have given their lives for
Israel's independence.
Victims of recent terror attacks
and the MIAs and POWs of the
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will
also be remembered. An IDF officer
will represent the military. A min-
ute of silent reflection will be held
while a siren is sounded
• A multimedia Yom HaZikaron
(Day of Remembrance for Israel's
fallen soldiers) commemoration
prepared by members of Kollel
Torah MiTzion will be held at 6:45
p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Young Israel
of Southfield, 27705 Lahser Road,
Southfield. Following a celebratory
prayer ushering in Yom HaAtzmaut,
a dessert reception will be served.
Cost is $7 per person or $30 per
family at the door.
•Yeshivat Akiva will host an
Israel Independence Day celebra-
tion and concert by Israeli Jewish
rock band, Shlock Rock (Lenny
Solomon), at the school, 21100 W.
12 Mile in Southfield. A dinner and
children's activities begin at 5 p.m.
The concert is at 6:15 p.m., with
a dessert reception following. $12
per person and $50 per family.
The events are sponsored by
Akiva, the Young Israel Council of
Metropolitan Detroit and the Kollel
Torah MiTzion.
