Shoah And Cancer

Haifa/JTA — Holocaust survivors
in Israel have a higher death rate
from cancer than contemporaries
who moved to Israel before World
War II, a new study found.
According to a University of Haifa
study, the younger a survivor was
during the war, the higher the risk
that he or she will develop cancer;
and cancer survival rates are lower
among survivors than among
those who didn't go through the
Holocaust.

'Zionist Crusade'

Washington/JTA — Osama bin
Laden said the West's refusal to
financially support a Hamas-led
Palestinian government proves that
the United States and Europe are at
war with Islam.
In an audiotape broadcast Sunday
by Al Jazeera, a voice believed to be
that of the Al Qaida leader called
the cutoff in aid to the Palestinian
Authority a "blockade" that "proves
that there is a Zionist crusader war
on Islam."

Masorti Sues

Jerusalem/JTA — The Israeli wing
of Conservative Judaism, Masorti,
filed a lawsuit against the Israeli gov-
ern f nent claiming discrimination in
praying at the Western Wall.
The lawsuit filed Sunday follows
an agreement between the move-
ment and the government that
assured its members freedom of
worship at the Robinson's Arch area
at the southern end of the Western
Wall, which is separate from the
nearby traditional site of Jewish
prayer.
During the past year, officials with
the movement say, they have been
told they have to pay an entrance fee
of 30 shekels ($5.50) to the tourist
center that runs the site in order to
pray.

Fewer At Services

New York/JTA — Jews are less
likely than Mormons and Christians
to attend religious services regularly,
according to a new Gallup poll.
• Some 15 percent of Jews say
they attend synagogue every week,
as opposed to nearly two-thirds
of Mormons and evangelical
Protestants. Between 43 and 45
percent of Catholics, Lutherans,
Methodists and Presbyterians said
they attended services weekly.
