And though Keller doesn't advo-
cate adding weights while walking,
she does suggest a separate session of
using lighter weights or bands. Adds
Berk, "Weight resistance through lift-
ing weights helps increase metabolism,
which helps burn fat. It also increases
bone density, which helps resist frac-
tures."
Keller, a strong advocate of exercise,
holds both a psychology and a dance
degree with a specialization in dance
therapy from Marygrove College in
Detroit and was co-owner of Fitnesse
Exercise Company for 15 years. "You
can exercise and do all the right things,
but they need to be accompanied by

healthy nutrition and good correspond-
ing eating habits," she says. To this end,
she works hand in hand with Townsend
Street Pilates registered dietician and
nutrition consultant Lisa Weinbaum.

Where To Go

Health clubs and exercise studios can
be marvelous places to work out on a
regular basis, but Berk says there also
can be great benefit from home-exer-
cise programs. "I find it amazing how
much fitness equipment people have
in their homes, but you don't have to
spend loads of money on a lot of equip-
ment to get physically fit," he says.
