N

onie Darwish, Muslim-born
daughter of an Egyptian
shahid (martyr) and
outspoken critic of the Arab "culture
of hate will be featured speaker
at a StandWithUs-Michigan com-
munity event on Sunday, April 2, at
the Holocaust Memorial Center in
Farmington Hills. StandWithUs is also
sponsoring her appearances at the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor
and Wayne State University in Detroit
later in the week.
"She is in the vanguard of coura-
geous Arabs and Muslims calling
for moderation and tolerance in the
Islamic world," says StandWithUs-
Michigan leader Linda Sfulberg of
Farmington Hills. "She condemns
terrorism against Israelis and all inno-
cents around the world
and warns against
Islamo-Fascism and its
pathology of hate."
Just off a national
tour called "Mothers
for Peace Darwish
appeared with a former
Israeli colonel who is
a mother of three to
Nonie Darwish
promote Mideast peace
and to end the indoc-
trination of hate in mosques, schools
and Arab society. Darwish recently
delivered a petition with 34,000 sig-
natures to the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences protesting
the Oscar nomination of Paradise
Now.
"As an Arab American mother, I
say the time for peace is now and not
paradise now:' Darwish declared at
a press conference before petition-
ing the Academy. "What we need is
hope, not hate. Unless and until — we
recognize that a culture of hate is the
root ofterror, there are those who will
believe it's justifiable to use violence
and murder to achieve their goals."
The Los Angeles resident grew up
in Cairo and Gaza in the 1950s as the
daughter of an officer dispatched by
President Gamal Abdel Nasser to head
Egyptian military intelligence in Gaza
and the Sinai. Her father directed
the Palestinian Fedayeen, or "armed
resistance The Fedayeen carried out
cross-border raids into Israel, killing
400 Israelis and wounding 900 more.
Her father was killed by Israeli sol-

diers when she was 8. The oldest high
school in Gaza was named after her
father, as are roads and a plaza. Nasser
instructed her to avenge her father's
death by killing JeWs.
Darwish earned a bachelor's degree
in sociology-anthropology from
American University in Cairo. and
worked as an editor and translator at
the Middle East News Agency. Today,
she travels the world and writes to
speak out against the "hate, vengeance
and retaliation" she says are the hall-
marks of Muslim indoctrination.
"From my childhood in Gaza until
today, blaming Israel and the West
has been an industry in the Muslim
world:' she says. "Dictators in coun-
tries surrounding the Palestinians
were only too happy to exploit the
,Palestinians as a diversion from prob-
lems in their own backyards. Is it any
surprise that after decades of indoc-
trination in a culture of hate, that
people actually do hate?
-
"Citizens competed to appease and
glorify their dictators, but they looked
the other way when Muslims tor-
tured and terrorized other Muslims.
I witnessed honor killings of girls,
oppression of women, female genital
' mutilation, polygamy and its devastat-
ing effect on family relations. All of
this is destroying the Muslim faith
from within!'
Darwish is the founder of Arabs for
Israel, which is dedicated to reconcili-
ation between Arabs and Israelis.

Nonie Darwish will speak 4 p.m.
Sunday, April 2, at the Holocaust
Memorial Center, 28123 Orchard
Lake Road. $5 at the door;
students free. This StandWithUs-
Michigan event is made possible
with funding from the Benard
L. Maas Foundation and is
co-sponsored by the National
Christian Leadership Conference
for Israel, Fellowship of Israel
and Black America, Greater
Detroit Chapter of Hadassah and
Aish Detroit. For information on
her local appearances, contact
