which have increased water capac-
ity by almost 7 percent. Leket
says that by 2025, Israel's current
demand for 2 billion cubic meters
of water a year will increase by an
additional billion.
"JNF reservoirs are needed to
save the situation until we have an
[economically and technologically
viable] plan for desalinization," he
said.
Leket said the best way to engage
the next generation is through
example, not by preaching or even
teaching.
"Set an example to your friends,
neighbors and family," he said.
"There are educational implica-
tions with everything that you do."
For Donna Sklar of Farmington
Hills, a board member involved
with JNF since joining its young
women's division 34 years ago,
Leket's message hit home.
"The whole concept of develop-
ment of the Negev, the reservoirs,
and its role in developing peace
with Israel's neighbors is exciting:'
she said. "JNF was so vital to the
development and settlement of the
State of Israel, and now it is so vital
to its continuity!'
Alex Stottland, an attorney
who moved to Birmingham from
New York seven months ago to be
with his fiancee Lily Epstein, was
pleased to be invited.
"JNF's work is so important for
Israel that it brings all Jewish peo-
ple together despite our divergent
views:' Stottland said.
"And without our land," added
Epstein, "we're back where we were
60 years ago."0
