any other suggestions similar to
oatmeal? Thanks, Marian.
nswer: Dear Marian,
Oatmeal is a special starch
_L. classified as a "B-Glucan."
A B-Glucan, Barley, oats, rye and
wheat all contain B-Glucan, gener-
ally in the amounts of about 7%,
5%, 2%, and less than 1%, respec-
tively.
B-Glucan intake has a positive
effect on reducing LDL (i.e., your
"bad") cholesterol. Cereal
grains like oats, rye and
barley also contain water
`/ soluble fiber, which can de-
lay glucose (sugar) absorp-

i effect on cholesterol.
1 / li Tri glycerides, the chemi-
1 / cal form in which most fat
exists in food and in the
body, can be lowered (a
good thing) by reducing your
intake of fat and simple carbohy-
drates (e.g., table sugar, fruit sugar,
and milk sugar).
Reducing arterial plaque formation
may be achieved by eating garlic,
ginger, soy protein, green tea, and
Omega-3 fish oil (caution if on
Coumadin) and less saturated fat.
I hope this information helps.
