ocus on children emphasizes
change for the future. The
city of Southfield's fifth
annual Day of Peace drew an esti-
mated 150 people of diverse cultural
and religious backgrounds Sunday
for an invitation-only event that
focused on children.
Through arts and crafts projects
and interactive games, the idea was
to allow children to understand other
cultures and work toward breaking

down walls. The children gave brief
explanations of the artwork they cre-
ated. Inflatable globes served as ref-
erence points for learning where
other cultures originated and for
emphasizing the need for world
peace.
Southfield itself is a very diverse
community. Of its population of
78,322 people, about 54 percent are
African American, about 39 percent
white, about 8 percent Asian
American and another 3 percent list
ed as "multiracial," according to the

Mayor Brenda Lawrence borrowed
the idea from a similar peace event
she'd attended at a mosque in
Dearborn.
Jewish participants were from the
Orthodox community. Rabbi Yechiel
Morris of Young Israel of Southfield
offered the opening blessing for the
day, which included kosher meals for
the Jewish contingent.
"The event celebrates the different
cultural, ethnic and reliigious back-
grounds of the greater Southfield
community, and fosters in our chil-
dren an openness to different cul-
tures and people," Rabbi Morris said.
"It was an open atmosphere to
talk, to have our kids play with one
another, and to know that though we
have physical differences, we in
Southfield have more in common
than we do differences. One of the
strengths to living in Southfield is
that is has such a diverse popula-
tion?"
