provided hundreds of ambulances for
Magen David Adorn (Red Shield of

I

How did you get
started?
"The first ambulance was funded by
Shaarit Haplaytah. I think it was $4,000.
And John called on his friends to form a
Medical-Dental Councilit was headed
by Dr. Morris Starkman. And Jewish
News founder Philip Slomovitz gave us a
lot of publicity."

the president of Shaarit Haplaytah, the
local Holocaust survivors' organization.
It was the summer of Israel's lightning

With his acceptance, Dr. Mames' wife,
Eva, evolved into a full-time volunteer
for Israel's emergency medical and
blood service. It is an unpaid job that
she has continued to do for 39 years —
from her home in Oak Park, from a
clothing store she owned for 13 years,
and from her home in the Bell Road
area of Southfield.
Over the years, the Michigan Chapter
of ARM DI — renamed the Dr. John J.
Mames Chapter after his death in 1989
— has raised millions of dollars and

How much money do you
raise each year?
"I really don't know exact figures. But
last year was typical — \ye sent seven
ambulances to Israel. They range from
$70,000 for a basic ambulance to
$90,000 for an advanced life support
ambulance. We also fund scholarships
for paramedic training. That's some-
thing we started here. Over the years, it
roust be 200-250 scholarships." The
